The Orange Pinwheel Project is a national awareness initiative that aims to bring visibility to homicide survivors and the lasting impact of violent loss.
The vision is to make September a recognized Homicide Survivor Awareness Month, using orange pinwheels as a powerful symbol of acknowledgment and resilience.
September was chosen intentionally due to September 25 being the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims (est. 2007). While this day already exists, there is currently no month-long national campaign dedicated specifically to those left behind after homicide. The Orange Pinwheel Project seeks to change that by expanding awareness beyond a single day and creating a month-long movement that honors not just victims, but the survivors left to navigate the aftermath of homicide. Through community pinwheel displays, educational outreach, and public engagement, the goal is to build national recognition for both
The Orange Pinwheel Project and September as Homicide Survivor Awareness Month. By making these initiatives a reality, we can ensure that homicide survivors are seen, acknowledged, and supported.
